A captivating plot
Set in the culturally popular Land of Oz, from L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel The Wizard of Oz", the musical Wicked begins in quite a dramatic fashion: the death scene of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba. A flashback takes us back to the witch when she was still young and was attending the school of sorcery Shiz University, where she had an out-of-the-ordinary relationship with Glinda, a Good Witch of The South. The rest of the stage play is told from Glinda's point of view, who tries to analyse the causes which led Elphaba to die.
Indeed, the show is well-known for making audiences laugh, cry and everything in between! Featuring stellar talents such as Louise Dearman and Sophie Evans playing the role of Elphaba, you’ll be witnessing the rise of one of some of the theatre’s best-kept secrets, alongside featuring songs like "Defying Gravity", "What is this feeling" and "For Good", as well as beautifully choreographed dances.
All about the musical
Based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of West by Gregory Maguire, we are given a glimpse of Elphaba’s past, discovering that evil isn’t born but made. In fact, it may come as a surprise to many to find that Maguire’s novel is actually targeted to adults.
Written and composed by the ever talented Stephen Schwartz, the musical deviates much from the original book, and so when the accompanying book was released it was reformed and written by Winnie Holzman (who also had a hand in writing the musical). Premiered on Broadway in 2003, the stage adaptation proved to be the perfect balance of catchy tunes and engrossing narrative!
