A mainstay since 1936
The fast-paced team sport of basketball first appeared at the Games in Saint Louis in 1904 as a demonstration event, but was eventually accepted competitively at Berlin in 1936. It was initially only open to men, but in 1976, women were also allowed to step onto the court to compete for their own medals. Unsurprisingly, the United States have been the team to beat in both competitions, with the men winning fifteen of the eighteen Games they’ve participated in and the women eight out of ten, including a consecutive six. The only other nations to have won gold in the sport are Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, the Unified Team and Argentina, the latter of which is the only country that still exists. Team USA are the reigning champions in both the men’s and women’s game, with the former defeating Serbia and the latter beating Spain at Rio in 2016. The likes of LeBron James, Derrick White and Jewell Loyd are expected to help the nation repeat the feat in 2021. Team USA expected to dominate
Eight of the twelve teams in the men’s tournament have already qualified for the 2021 Games, with hot favourites United States joining Nigeria, Argentina, Iran, France, Spain, Australia and the host nation, Japan. The four remaining spots will be decided by the FIBA Men’s Qualifying Tournaments, which take place at the end of June. In the women’s game, all twelve teams have booked their places. Japan, United States, Spain, Australia, Nigeria and France will be represented again, alongside Puerto Rico, Serbia, China, South Korea, Canada and Belgium. The action will take place at the Saitama Super Arena and the Aomi Urban Sports Park, kicking off with the men’s group stages on 26th of July and finishing with the women’s final on 9th of August.
