Planned back in 1990, the stadium finally saw fruition in 1997, costing a total of £29 million to build, where upon its opening could the stadium won the award for "Best Away Ground"! As far as the stadium's name, Stadium of Light, it's actually a reference to mining lamps, as the grounds it was built on originally hosted Wearmouth Colliery and many of Sunderland's residence have worked in the neighbouring mines.
