This British new wave band started in the late 1970s but shot to international fame in 1983, with the release of their third album True. The record spawned several international hit singles, most notably Gold. In 1989 the band went their separate ways and, while Martin and Gary Kemp continued with acting, Tony Hadley tried to forge a solo career. In 2009 and after much speculation the new wave veterans announced a brand new tour and released a seventh album. Spandau Ballet were known as The Cut when they were first formed and changed their name to The Makers in 1976 and then Gentry in 1978. They settled on Spandau Ballet after a friend of the band saw the phrase written on a toilet wall in Germany! The band were in high demand during their ascension and were involved in a bidding war between record companies, eventually deciding to sign with Chrysalis Records and releasing record To Cut a Long Story Short soon afterwards.
