Skepta's rise to the top
Born Joseph Junior Adenuga to Nigerian parents, Skepta grew up in the North London area of Tottenham. Interested in US and UK hip-hop from a young age, he started out by appearing on pirate radio and performing MC battles. Skepta then joined Wiley's grime crew Roll Deep, before leaving to focus on his own label Boy Better Know. After independently releasing his first two albums Greatest Hits and Microphone Champion through his own label, he signed to All Around the World Records in 2010. That same year he had his first Top 40 single for the song "Bad Boy" which was followed up by "Rescue Me", leading to attention from Chipmunk and P Diddy.
The third Skepta album Doin' It Again (2011) charted in the UK showing the continual rise of Skepta and his music. Interestingly, trying to take his sound down a more commercial route, Skepta had to scrap a yet-to-be-released album, The Honeymoon, due to disappointing reactions from fans. The new Skepta album that followed, Konnichiwa, did not disappoint. The album was released to widespread critical acclaim and peaked at number 2 on the UK charts as well as performing well in Australia, Ireland, Holland and New Zealand.
