Formed in the early seventies by Brian May and then bassist Tim Staffell, going by the name of Smile, the story goes that in order to find a drummer the two put up posters on their college notice board looking for a “Mitch Mitchell/Ginger Baker type” drummer. When a young dental student, going by the name of Roger Taylor, auditioned for the role and got the job straight away. It was actually Staffell who introduced Farrokh “Freddie” Bulsara to the band, after becoming friends with him at Ealing Art College. When Staffell left Smile to join Humpy Bong, it was Bulsara who urged the band to continue, taking Staffell’s place as lead singer and under his suggestion changing the name of the band to Queen! In later interviews, Bulsara explained that “I thought up the name Queen. It’s just a name, but it’s very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid. It’s a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay connotations, but that was just one facet of it.
”
Of course, with Staffell taking on a dual-role, the band were also missing a bass player, and a number of bassists were tried before the band eventually settled with Jon Deacon, who seemed to fit with the band’s chemistry perfectly. Recording four of their own songs, and creating a demo tape, the band unfortunately failed to pique the interest of any record companies. It was also around this time, that Freddie Bulsura decided to change his name to Mercury! Mercury later revealed that the name was actually inspired by the line “Mother Mercury, look what they’ve done to me,” in the song My Fairy King! It was also around this time that Queen’s logo was designed, aptly named the Queen’s crest, the logo consists of zodiac signs representing the band. With two lion’s representing Deacon and Taylor (both whom of which are Leos), a crab representing May (Cancer) and two fairies representing Mercury (Virgo)! Bearing resemblance to the UK’s royal coat of arms, the logo proved just as iconic as the band’s music, furthering their image! So don’t miss out the chance to see this amazing band as they return for perhaps one last time and buy your Queen tickets now, in just a few simple clicks!
In seventy-two, Queen managed to grab the attention of Trident Studios, and were given a management deal with Norman Sheffield, alongside studio time to work with more hi-tech recording equipment. Talks and discussions went on between the two, and although an eventual deal was brokered, Trident found it difficult to find a relevant label to release the type of music Queen began pioneering! The following year, under a Trident/EMI deal, Queen managed o release their eponymous debut album! Which, for want of a better phrase, excelled beyond expectation!
Suffice to say, with such humble beginnings who’d have thought the band would reach the stellar level of fame and infamy that Queen now stands at in today’s music world! So don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to see this phenomenal band live, and buy your Queen tickets now, right here at StubHub!
