Founded in ninety-four, singer/guitarist Brian Molko and guitarist/bassist Stefan Olsdal formed the band when the two, having both attended the American International School of Luxembourg, were reunited at a south Kensington tube station, when Molko, upon noticing Olsdal guiatar, invited Olsdal to a local gig that he was performing. Molko’s performance was so good that Olsdal insisted on forming a band, and the two together formed the band Ashtray Heart. Although Steve Hewitt was Molko’s first choice as a drummer, Robert Schultzberg took the role of drummer as Hewitt’s previous commitments with a local band called Breed, saw Hewitt only play occasionally. While Olsdal stated that the name “Placebo” came from its Latin origins, translating to “I will please”, Molko himself said of the name in an interview “It’s a complex question to answer, really. As musicians you try to find a name for your band that represents you and you never really do, because, basically names for bands lose their meaning after a while. They become a series of sounds that you associate with people in music. The most important thing for a name is that you can imagine forty-thousand people people screaming it in unison.”

Placebo’s eponymously titled debut album released in ninety-six, with the album reaching in at number five in the UK Albums Chart, this was during the peak of the Britpop era, and stands as their highest-charting album in the UK to this day! Their hit single “Nancy Boy” rocketed straight to number four, and is the reason that their album reached as high as number five. Critically the album received notable praise, with Allmusic saying of the album “The key to Placebo’s sound is singer/guitarist Brian Molko, whose impersonations of a woman goes far beyond his appearance and into his singing voice. His trio brings together various influences – the epic, noisy “Chicago sound”, late seventies prog rock and late eighties “college rock” – but boils them down into fairly conventional, guitar-heavy melodrama, with the sort of opaque and angst-ridden lyrics usually found in that genre”, two years later it was voted in at number eighty-seven in Q magazine’s “All Time Top One Hundred Albums” list.

Despite their success, tension mounted between the band and their drummer, having been initially fired in ninety-five, Schultzberg was rehired in order to record their first seven-inch single “Bruise Pristine”. However a heated argument in ninety-six, Molko decided that Schultzberg’s departure would be best for the band, and the band agreed that after promoting Placebo, Schultzberg would leave. A month later, during their US tour, Schultzberg left the band, promising to play two final shows in Paris. Schultzberg said about the split “Molko said that he was ‘tired of being the focus of Robert’s rages against the world’, and quite frankly, I was tired of being his.” Hewitt then stepped in and became Placebo’s full-time drummer.

Switching to major record label Virgin Records in ninety-eight, Placebo released their sophomore effort Without You I’m Nothing. While success in the UK was all but guaranteed, they broke the US with hit single “Pure Morning”, reaching number twenty on the Billboard Heatseekers chart! Since this album, the British music press have on occasion mocked the perceived pretension of Molko, however this has never stopped the band from proving they’re more than talk!
