National Basketball League history
The National Basketball League, more commonly known as the NBL, was founded in 1979 and originally the NBL fixtures would take place during the Australian winter. However, this was changed in 1998 so as not to compete with the hugely popular Australian winter sports like the AFL (Aussie Rules Football) and NRL (Rugby League). Now, NBL matches take place between October and April with the NBL Finals and Grand Final the culmination of the basketball season. The NBL Finals are the crowning glory of the National Basketball League season and tickets for these NBL games are known to sell out very quickly as fans are desperate to see who will be crowned NBL champion.
The most successful team in the history of the NBL are the Perth Wildcats, originally the Westate Wildcats, with eight NBL championships to their name (1990, 1991, 1995, 2000, 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2017), the Wildcats have also, since 1987, appeared in every Finals series, a feat unmatched in the NBL. Other successful NBL teams include the Melbourne United (previously the Melbourne Tigers) who have won five titles (1993, 1997, 2006, 2008 and 2018), the Adelaide 36ers (four titles - 1986, 1998, 1999 and 2002) and the New Zealand Breakers (2011, 2012, 2013 & 2015).
