Mayday concerts lead the Chinese Invasion
The Taiwanese rockers are at the forefront of what has been dubbed the "Chinese Invasion", a reference to the "British Invasion" of the 1960s, signalling the increasing influence of Chinese music in Western pop culture. Their recognition grows throughout the English-speaking world, having already conquered Hong Kong, Singapore and many other countries on the back of the Chinese-speaking world. The boys are anxious to spread their fame across the United States and beyond! Other artists taking over include Hong Kong's Jacky Cheung, Taiwan's Amei or Mandarin superstar Jay Chou.
The band's background
Formed in 1997, Mayday has been shaped by some of the most renowned rock artists of all time; particularly from the Beatles. In fact, Mayday hope to someday become the “Beatles of the Chinese World”! Choosing to sing in Mandarin and the local Hokkien dialect, the alt-rock band resonate with fans in Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia, to name a few.
Mayday's debut full-length studio release, simply named Mayday's First Album (1999), was responsible for making the band reach the spotlight. With massive hit singles like "Racing Car", "Peter and Mary" and "Embrace", it was not long before their concerts earned the reputation of always being sold-out. In fact, Mayday are able to boast of breaking Taiwan's record for the largest number of attending fans, a record previously held by none other than Michael Jackson!
Their music can be described as a blend of garage rock and midtempo love ballads, also incorporating Western musical influences. In lyrics from songs like "Armed", Mayday makes reference to a wide variety of cultural figures including Che Guevara, Mickey Mouse, writer Haruki Murakami and Chinese mythical monkey-god Sun Wu-Kong. The band has won numerous awards, including four "Golden Melody Award for Best Musical Group"! Having released their ninth album History of Tomorrow in 2016, Mayday are proving that, very much like wine, they only get better with time! Mayday is set to play yet more concerts throughout 2018 and tour tickets can be found right here, at StubHub. Buy Mayday concert tickets today and watch these Taiwanese rock legends live.
