Madonna background
It all started for Madonna when she moved from her hometown of Michigan to New York. She arrived with just thirty-five dollars in her pocket and kept afloat by working as a waitress at Dunkin´ Donuts and as a backing dancer. She slowly started creeping into the music industry forming two bands along the way. One of her songs landed in the lap of DJ Mark Kamins who arranged a meeting with Sire Records founder Seymour Stein and it led to her singing a deal with the record company and releasing her first single “Everybody”.
Following this up with “Burning Up”, which reached number three in Billboard magazine’s Hot Dance Club Songs, it soon made sense for the singer to work on her debut, eponymously-titled, Madonna! While the album was dismissed by critics at the time, retrospection has seen many contemporary critics applaud Madonna, with it ranking number 5 on Entertainment Weekly’s list of “Top 100 Best Albums of Past 25 Years”!
Of course, it was her follow-up sophomore effort, Like a Virgin that really saw Madonna take the world by storm! Topping the charts in a number of countries, the title single, “Like a Virgin” remained in the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks on the trot! Deciding to take a more hands-on approach to her recording, Madonna actually wanted to be the record producer, despite Warner Bros. reluctance to give her the artistic freedom she wanted. As such, Nile Rodgers was given the position of primary producer, having previously worked with David Bowie. That being said Madonna worked closely with Rodgers, and with both of them unaccustomed to working early mornings, the two seemed to click. As Rodgers was once quoted on saying “The thing between us, man, it was sexual, it was passionate, it was creativity… it was pop.”
