Joe Hisaishi was born Mamoru Fujisawa in Nakano, Japan and began playing violin at the tender age of five. After studying music composition at the Kintachi College of Music, Joe Hisaishi released his first album in 1981 - Mkwaju. 1983 marked Hisaishi's first film score and also his first collaboration with 'one of the greatest animation directors' Hayao Miyazaki on the film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Joe Hisaishi continued to write music outside of the world of film. However, it is his musical scores for movies that has won him so many admirers and accolades.
Some of Hisaishi's musical highlights include animation scores for My Neighbor Totoro (1988), and Princess Mononoke (1997). Joe Hisaishi also worked on the Academy Award (Oscar) winning movie Spirited Away and 2004's Howl's Moving Castle. Joe Hisaishi has not only worked with Hayao Miyazaki, he has also created numerous soundtracks for live-action director Takeshi Kitano. These include his work on Dolls and Outrage. As a result of his work throughout his career, Joe Hisaishi has won several awards including the prestigious Japanese Academy Award for Best Music an astonishing seven times (1992, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2000, 2009 and 2011).
