Hinterm Horizont background and history
The first performance of the musical took place at the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin in 2011 and ran for five years to an audience of over two million viewers. In early 2016 when the show's popularity ebbed the show's run ended, However, the musical has been reimagined and once again opened at Hamburg Operettenhaus in November 2016.
In the musical Udo Lindenberg, who is attending a concert in the Palace of the Republic in 1983 falls in love with the FDJ activist Jessy. This meeting is based on a true story. There was, in fact, a concert in East Berlin and the GDR tour was actually cancelled by the GDR leadership. The concert deals with the political and historical environment surrounding the GDR, the Stasi and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The musical is presented in cabaret style.
One of the novel aspects of the show is the inclusion of a nine-metre Udo hat which usually hovers above the stage or appears as a backdrop. The Berlin Wall has also been replicated and acts as a projection screen upon which scenes are presented.
In Act II, Jessy realises she is pregnant and marries Marco. he is still in love with Udo and tries to leave to see him. When her son is two she realises that the Berlin Wall is no more and she can now go wherever she wants to. In the west, she hears that Udo will be performing in a concert and tries to talk to him but he refuses as he believes that she had been sent as a spy from the East to gather information on him.
