FA Cup - A Brief History
The Emirates FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world and has provided the blueprint for the rest of football competitions around the world. The first tournament took place in 1871 and current non-league side Wanderers were crowned inaugural winners. The Cup was then expanded and qualifying rounds were introduced in the 1888-89 season. The only time that the FA Cup has not taken place since 1871 was during the First and Second World Wars.
Arsenal is the most successful team in the tournament's history and also the current champions. In total the team from North London has won an impressive 13 FA Cup trophies, holds the record for most appearances in an FA Cup final (20) and manager Arsene Wenger is the most successful manager in the tournament's history.
FA Cup Biggest Upsets
A big part of the magic of the FA Cup is seeing an occasional giant slaying or 'cupset'. There have been some truly famous upsets through the years, most recently coming in 2017 when non-league Lincoln City shocked Premier League side Burnley at Turf Moor. Other notable FA 'Cupsets' include Shrewsbury knocking out Everton in 2003, Herford winning against Newcastle in 1972 and Chelsea losing at home to Bradford in 2015. There are of course many more and this season will surely include more. Get FA Cup 2018 tickets here at to see for yourself which giant will be slain.
