Evita the musical
Based on the story of Eva Perón, Evita charts the early life, rise and eventual death of the Argentine First Lady throughout some of the most historic decades of Argentina’s history. The musical began life in the 1970s, when Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice came together to produce a concept album based on the political figure’s story. The album was released to much acclaim in 1976 and a live production in London’s West End would soon follow.
Evita was first unveiled to UK audiences in the West End in 1978. Much like the album that came before it, the musical was met with critical acclaim. The production quickly pocketed the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical, while the Broadway production would be graced with the Tony Award in the same category the following year. Since then, there have been countless musical productions worldwide, as well as a 1996 movie production starring Antonio Banderas and Madonna.
