Earth, Wind & Fire - background to a groundbreaking band
Categorising the music of the band has always been hard as it doesn't fit neatly into any one musical genre but rather blends a mix of soul, Africana, disco, pop and jazz. What always shines through, though, is a message of spiritualism, love and peace. At the peak of its fame Earth, Wind & Fire had a lineup of ten musicians backed with the groundbreaking Phenix Horns section. The force behind the group was always Maurice White. He sang lead vocals alongside the gospel singer Philip Bailey and oversee studio production with producer Charles Stepney. His talents didn't end with the music. He also designed the Egyptian and Biblical themed covers that characterised all of the band's albums.
How Earth, Wind & Fire came into the mainstream was almost accidental. Around the year 1970, the radical playwright Melvin Van Peebles was putting together a low-budget film, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song and needed a soundtrack. His assistant was dating Maurice White whose group was still trying to break into music success. The film and soundtrack album were a surprising hit and the group broke new ground in moving black performers into the limelight, paving the way for Isaac Haye's Shaft and Superfly by Curtis Mayfield.
Earth, Wind & Fire - where gospel meets rock
The group's first album to reach the top of the charts was That's the Way of the World released in 1975. At the peak of its initial fame Earth, Wind & Fire put nearly a dozen gold and platinum discs on the walls of its members and regularly topped the charts with songs like "After the Love is Gone" and "Shining Star". Earth, Wind & Fire has been inducted into Rock and Roll's Hall of Fame, has its own star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame and won two Lifetime Achievement Awards. With over 100 million record sales the lineup remains one of the best-selling bands of all times. The large ensemble of Earth, Wind & Fire has always produced breathtaking live concerts not least because of the fantastic costumes.
