David Baddiel: Jack of all Trades
As a one-time member of Cambridge Footlights David Baddiel was always destined to be renowned in the world of writing, comedy and acting. Baddiel turned to stand-up comedy straight from university over 30 years ago, during this time he also wrote for major shows such as Spitting Image and Rory Bremner. David Baddiel became a household name however when he joined forces with Rob Newman, Steve Punt and Huge Dennis in the late '80s. The foursome became The Mary Whitehouse Experience which began as a radio show, moved to BBC2 and eventually saw them performing live on stage all over the UK. The madcap humour, parodies, satire, impersonations and sketches of the show made it popular with a wide range of people, young and old. Baddiel enjoyed further successful partnerships, first with just Rob Newman and later with Frank Skinner, with whom he presented the Fantasy Football League on BBC2 and then the improvised live televised stage show Baddiel and Skinner Unplanned. He has written many books for children and adults and for a while became more popular for selling books than being on stage. In recent years however Baddiel has returned to the stage for more solo stand-up acts, including FAME: Not the Musical in 2013, which received critical acclaim after an Edinburgh Fringe Show before moving to the Menier Chocolate Factory Theatre and eventually nationwide. His latest sell-out solo tour began in 2016, My Family: Not the Sitcom; a heartwarming, humorous and self-confessional one-man comedy performance centering around his father's dementia.
