From book to film to stage
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical is based on the original award-winning films of 1971 and 2005, both created faithfully from Roald Dahl's novel of 1964. On stage favourite songs from the films such as "Pure Imagination" and "The Candy Man" are jazzed up with a new score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the songwriters of Hairspray. David Greig wrote the stage book and the fun choreography is by Joshua Bergasse. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory premiered in London at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in June 2013 before transferring to Broadway in early 2017 and now coming to Australia in 2019.
The show follows the tale of young and impoverished Charlie Bucket who finds a golden ticket in his favourite chocolate bar. This gives him entry to the chocolate factory and a tour led by the mysterious Willy Wonka. While definitely entertaining, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, like all of Roald Dahl's work, has salutary overtones. Charlie's companions on the tour are a bunch of nasty, spoilt children who meet dastardly ends helped along by the peculiar Oompa-Loompas. Some plot changes were made to the Broadway production. The happy ending remains, though, with Charlie and his family taking over the management of the factory.
