Forming in Leeds back in their university days of 2007, the band originally consisted of Gwil Sainsbury on guitar and bass, Joe Neman on guitar and vocals, Gus Unger-Hamilton on keyboards and vocals and Thom Green on the drums! Quick bit of trivia, Unger-Hamilton and stands as the younger brother of Ferdy, head of A&R for the successful indie record label Polydor Records! While Unger-Hamilton studied English, the other three each studied Art, and it was in fact Sainsbury and Newman who founded the band, playing and recording Newman’s hand-written songs with Sainsbury producing the songs through the readily-available Mac software GarageBand! It has been said that the band’s trademark sound actually stems from their recording within their student halls, with noise having to be kept at the bare minimum. Suffice to say the pair were limited in what they could play, and both bass guitars and bass drums were considered “off the table”.
Upon graduation, the band joined the league of post-graduates claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, and spent their unemployment rehearsing and practicing. Eventually their work paid off, with band gaining a record deal with Infectious Records, a label which has seen the likes of The Subways, along with founder Korda Marshall having brought in such giants as Muse and Paul Oakenfold! With their self-titled EP, showcasing tracks like “Breezeblocks”, “Tessellate” and “Matilda”, their debut album An Awesome Wave, soon followed much to the delight of indie rock fans everywhere!
Of course despite the success, the band suffered a slight blow when Sainsbury decided to leave the band. Having left the band amicably Sainsbury’s departure has left an impression with the band, and whether a replacement will brought is still much up to debate!
