Alt-J Background
Forming in Leeds back in their university days of 2007, the band originally consisted of Gwil Sainsbury on guitar and bass, Joe Neman on guitar and vocals, Gus Unger-Hamilton on keyboards and vocals and Thom Green on the drums! While Unger-Hamilton studied English, the other three each studied Art, and it was, in fact, Sainsbury and Newman who founded the band, playing and recording Newman’s hand-written songs with Sainsbury producing the songs.
After graduating from Leeds University, the band moved to Cambridge and began producing even more music. In 2012 Alt-J released An Awesome Wave which went on to win the coveted 'Mercury Prize' for best album, seeing their profile (and sales) skyrocket. 2014 saw the release of their second album This Is All Yours and the record went straight to number one on the UK Official Albums Chart. Now, in 2017, Alt-J have released their most recent album Relaxer, this album was also nominated for the 2017 Mercury Prize but they were beaten to the award by Sampha.
